England batter Jason Roy is on the verge of getting dropped from England’s ODI squad if he fails to rack up the runs in the limited opportunities that he has leading into the ODI World Cup.
The England cricket team will be playing an ODI series against South Africa starting January 27, and Jason Roy will be under pressure to perform well, otherwise he might again be snubbed from the ODI squad ahead of the marquee event scheduled to be played in India in October-November.
He’s got to perform now: Steve Harmison
“With a World Cup around the corner, Jason’s got to perform now,” former England fast bowler Steve Harmison told talkSPORT.
Harmison stated that the 32-year-old is totally out of form for a very long time and with the World Cup coming up, if Roy really wishes to be a part of England’s 50-overs World Cup squad, he has to by all means perform at his best in the upcoming ODI series against South Africa.
Also, he has warned Roy stating there are many other players waiting for their turns and who are in red-hot form currently. Jonny Bairstow is almost on the verge of returning to the national side after recovering from his inury, while Phil Salt and Will Jacks are just waiting for their chance to represent the country.
“He’s had a lot of people question him and a lot of people back him and I back Jason Roy to go out and score some runs. For me, he plays in these three ODIs and probably gets a little bit of a bump in the summer, but when Bairstow’s fit then the question marks will come and if Jason Roy’s still out of form then there will be changes afoot.
There has to be. He’s a fantastic 50-over player, he’s a World Cup winner, but there’s only so long you can go for [on reputation and past performances]. I still think there’s a little bit of credit in the bank, but it’s slowly going down and trying to get some form in these franchise [competitions] has been a little bit more difficult as well.” Harmison added.
