Marco Jansen is known for leaving the batters puzzled with his pace and accuracy. But he stood out with the bat as his brisk knock helped the Sunrisers Eastern Cape register a hard-fought two-wicket win over the MI Cape Town in Match 12 of the SA20 2023 at Newlands, Cape Town on Wednesday, January 18.
However, what really stood out during his counter-attacking knock was him smashing MI Cape Town skipper and seasoned leggie Rashid Khan for 28 runs in an over. It completely changes the complexion of the game and eventually helped the Sunrisers snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
Marco Jansen unleashed his batting skills and then the match turned on its head. It could have gone either way in the last five overs. Realizing the need to get some quick wickets, MI Cape Town skipper Rashid Khan took the initiative of bowling the 16th over, but Jansen ensured that it was a failed move by making his bat do the talking right from the word ‘go’.
Jansen first clobbered Rashid for a huge six bringing the equation down to 61 runs off 29 deliveries. The Proteas pacer showed a fearless intent despite being a long way away from the target and with his team already having lost six wickets early.
Rashid at the receiving end of Jansen’s wrath
As they say ‘Fortune favors the brave’, Marco Jansen was also rewarded for his gutsy batting approach. He got very lucky off the next ball which took a big outside edge of his bat and raced away for four with no slip in place. On the third delivery, the batter courageously advanced down the track and succeeded in clearing the boundary and finding six more precious runs.
The tail-ender showed no remorse and took the Afghan spin icon to the cleaners with two successive maximums to bring the equation down to 39 runs from 24 balls forcing MI Cape Town captain Rashid Khan to rethink his strategy.
