Jeremy Sochan and the San Antonio Spurs have surprised most NBA fans with their hot start this season. During their close matchup against the Memphis Grizzlies, however, center Steven Adams relayed a story about the Spurs’ cheeky rookie.
Sochan has captivated fans with his unorthodox style of play. The young forward has often drawn comparisons to former Spurs forward Dennis Rodman. From jersey numbers, hair color and defensive tenacity, this year’s ninth overall pick is like the modern-day Rodman.
During the Spurs’ match against the Grizzlies on Wednesday, Adams shared a tactic that the rookie forward used to throw the Kiwi big man out of his game.
“In the last play of the game, he was messing me around … he pinched my nipple,” Adams said with a smile. “I was like ‘Get out of here, ya dirty bastard!’ Trying to break my concentration.”
Adams had the last laugh as Memphis won the close game 124-122 in overtime. However, fans couldn’t help but share their reactions to Sochan’s antics against the gentle giant. Here are some of the best reactions.
The Spurs are currently 5-7 and Sochan has done a tremendous job so far as their rookie.

Jeremy Sochan isn’t an ordinary rookie
Entering the NBA as the ninth pick in this year’s draft, no one really knew what type of player Jeremy Sochan was. He’s an undersized power forward who isn’t a reliable outside threat. But what he lacks in offense, he makes up for with his defensive skills. Which is why he’s been compared to Rodman.
Sochan is a laid-back type of player. Based on his recent outings, the young forward isn’t worried about putting up tons of points on the score sheet. At the start of the season, it was obvious that he struggled to make shots. That isn’t that much of a big deal since Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell are the team’s go-to scorers.
After a few games where coach Gregg Popovich allowed the young forward to play, he slowly developed his confidence on the floor. So far, he’s been one of the most fun rookies to watch for his defensive flexibility. During one game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, he was able to swat Rudy Gobert’s dunk attempt.
Sochan believes in himself as well as his teammates. Even fans admire the energy he exudes. His offensive game will develop throughout time, but now his defense is what’s helping him get some playing time. With Jeremy, the future is looking bright for San Antonio and its young core.
